Abstract: In 1924,10 miles of 17 bare steel gas main was installed by PSE&G utilizing gas and electric arc welding. Over the years, all but 1.4 miles of the original installation was replaced with 16 coated and cathodically protected steel gas main. This article describes the replacement of the final 1.4 miles of the 17 steel main utilizing 12 polyethylene plastic pipe. Features of the article include the type of plastic pipe selected, engineering and economic considerations, and insertion construction details.
