Abstract: The invention of the steam engine is said to have marked the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The concept of these early engines is quite similar to modern internal combustion and turbine engines. These engines required the constant attendance of men using their senses of touch, hearing and sight to determine operating conditions and to adjust mechanisms and valves to produce the desired output. The operators knowledge and physical strength were necessary for proper and safe operation.
