Abstract: Rotary type positive displacement gas meters, utilizing two figure eight impellers, were first introduced to the gas industry during the early 1920s. This Impeller type was the only rotary meter available until the 1960s, at which time two types of rotating vane meters were developed. The first was introduced in the early 1960s and was designed with two vanes on the rotor assembly. The second was introduced in I969 and was designed with four vanes on the rotor assembly. The turbine meter, first developed and used in Europe, was introduced to the American gas industry in the early 1960s. The turbine meter, because it is capable of accurately measuring very large volumes over a wide minimum-to-maximum flow range, has become quite popular and has been used extensively in recent years.
