Abstract: Most of the Free Worlds forty-five million barrels a day of petroleum requirements are moved by tanker from the production fields to consuming locations. The United States has been for many years the noteworthy exception among the highly industrialized countries that had insufficient indigenous crude oil supplies to meet their needs.
