Abstract: OPTICAL CHART SCANNIN IS AN INTERPRETATION MEDIUM THAT HAS FINALLY MATURED. CHART SCANNERS HAVE BEEN WITH US FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, BUT THE FIRST GENERATION REQUIRED MUCH PREPARATION OF CHARTS AND WERE LIMITED TO SIMPLE PATTERNS. THESE EARLY SCANNERS DID PRECISELY WHAT THEY WERE DESIGNED TO DO: REDUCE MANUAL INTEGRATION BY READING SIMPLE PATTERNS QUICKLY. NOW WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF MICRO-PROCESSOR BASED EQUIPMENT BY COMPANIES SUCH AS METROLOGY ONE AND SONCEBOZ, ELECTRONIC INTERPRETATION OF CHARTS HAS BEEN REBORN.
