Abstract: Supervisory control and data acquisition is relatively new in the production phase of the oil and gas industry. With the advent of flow computers in the late 70s, remote data acquisition began to creep into the oil patch. By contrast, new flow computer installations are now most likely tied into communication systems at the initial installation. Measurement staff commonly discuss auxiliary monitoring requirements with production foreman before choosing (sizing) the flow computer model. What is still uncommon is assigning control features, especially automatic, to flow computers, PLCs, and RTUs to field installations.
