Abstract: During the calendar year 1979 Citizens Gas and Coke Utility, Indianapolis, reduced operating costs 115,000 by utilizing a vacuum excavator which made it possible to work through a one-foot square excavation to cut and plug 2,112 inactive services. The vacuum excavator method of abandoning inactive service lines, working through a one-foot square excavation, offers a number of benefits, most of which can be expressed in dollars.
