Abstract: The modern domestic gas meter has changed considerably since it was first introduced in this country over 100 years ago. Although the basic principles of measurement are still the same, the materials and manufacturing techniques now used have brought about major improvements in accuracy and dependability. Todays aluminum case meters have higher working pressures, resist weathering in nearly all climates, and operate for longer periods without repair (Figure 1). The development of a synthetic rubber diaphragm material to replace leather brought about a significant improvement in stability. The introduction of die-cast aluminum bodies and covers eventually permitted the utilities to install meters outdoors in areas where tin meters were normally installed indoors. This, of course, greatly reduced the time required for meter reading.
