Abstract: A test program has been executed by Transamerica Delaval Inc. to evaluate the use of active magnetic bearings in the design of highspeed turbomachinery. A laboratory version of a vintage 1965 multi-biage high-pressure air compressor rotor was used as the test vehicle. The rotor was operated at a wide range of conditions. Operation was smooth and controlled at all speeds. TDI now offers the active magnetic bearing to users for both retrofit and selected new applications and is currently involved in the retrofit of a compressor that will include both active magnetic bearings and dry seals.
