Abstract: Most metrologists have a mixed background in statistics. It is often learned on the fly and we constantly refer to textbooks for formulae and tables. This is usually adequate but not very satisfying, especially when a formula needs to be extended to cover a situation different from the example. Statistics has the strange characteristic that the common knowledge is easily referenced and memorized, but it is significantly harder to find out just a little bit more or why. We hear that the answer is in advanced textbooks which are all very ominous to look at and require a thorough reading from page one to understand anything that appears in a later chapter.
