Abstract: The deregulation of the natural gas pipeline industry has forced local distribution companies (LDCs) to focus on ways to obtain the most timely and accurate gas measurement data possible. Utilities are increasingly relying on remote meter reading systems (RMRs) to capture important meter data to help manage gas supply services. Successful RMR systems can be very expensive and the choice of communication between meter site and the remote meter reading system host can greatly affect the overall project cost. In recent years, cellular communication has become a viable alternative as the associated costs have decreased and provider coverage has expanded. This paper discusses the advantages of cellular technology used as the communication link in a remote meter reading system and ways meter data is used to benefit the local distribution company.
