Abstract: Optical spectroscopy methods are finding increased applications in analysis of natural gas from processing to the point of use. These applicat ions are expected to grow in the coming years. This paper is aimed at helping beginning level techni cian get a broad overview of this topic. It will cover the fundamentals of optical spectroscopy as applied to natural gas analysis, without the use of rigorous mathematical and physical concepts. The discussion is then followed by each type of spectroscopy that is finding a pplications in natural gas including absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and fluorescen ce quenching spectroscopy. The focus is on field-deployable methods and no t laboratory based techniques
