Abstract: In the past three to four years there has been noticeably increasing activity in companies engaged in the transmission and distribution of natural gas in the analysis of the overpressure protection methods that they use in order to make sure that the provisions of USAS B31.8 are being met. Studies are being made to insure that requirements of general design, component selection, capacity and periodic testing are in accordance with the Code for Pressure Piping. In view of this it would seem appropriate to discuss the requirements of USAS B31.8 generally, and some of the available devices permitted to limit overpressure in more specific terms.
