Abstract: On one cold winter night in 1977, an explosion occurred at a main intersection of Schenectady, New York. No one at the time knew what happened. Our crews were sent lo the area to investigate. We probed the area, checked all the manholes and sewers and to our dismay found that there was indeed a gas leak. Further investigation determined that it was natural gas. Excavating, we found that a 12 east iron main which was operating at about 20 pounds pressure had cracked and leaked gas under the pavement and into the building. We were fortunate that no one was hurt, but the building and sidewalk needed a little reconditioning.
