Abstract: There is little doubt that in the next twenty years, the utilization of cavities, from which salt has been extracted by conventional or solution mining techniques, will play a vital role in supporting the growing energy and environmental demands being placed on America, Unfortunately, although salt has been studied for many years by geologists and geophysicists, a review of the world literature indicates that the necessary expertise for designing, constructing and stability monitoring of engineering structures constructed in salt is extremely limited.
