Abstract: Today in 1982, we find ourselves standing on the threshold of a new era in the field of utility meter reading. Thanks to recent technological breakthroughs in integrated circuitry and microprocessors, the practice of meter reading is about to come of age. These developments and others from the past, present and future will be discussed in the text that follows.
