Abstract: The maximum pressure to which the reservoir may be subjected, and still remain mechanically stable under the action of the combined in-situ stresses and the stresses induced by pressurization of the reservoir itself is defined as the optimum pressure. In general, it is assumed that this optimum pressure depends on the following factors: 1. The in-situ stresses 2. The reservoir geometry 3. The physical properties of the reservoir, cap and immediate surrounding rocks When the optimum pressure is exceeded the reservoir becomes mechanically unstable and fractures develop which may eventually lead to a release of the stored gas.
