Abstract: The reciprocating steam engine producing continuous rotation of a flywheel and crank shaft was invented in 1781 by J. Murray Watts. The cycle or sequence of events, namely, the position of the valve relative to its seat, and the position of the piston relative to the crank as used in that engine, is used in the modern steam engine. This cycle is used in domestic and industrial gas meters today.
