Abstract: A new method for measuring calorific value has been developed. The basis for the method is a proportional relationship between calorific value and the ratio of air to natural gas which maximizes the adiabatic flame temperature of mixtures of the two. This relationship is derived in the paper. An apparatus for measuring the air to gas ratio which maximizes flame temperature is described. The calorific values of several natural gas samples were measured using this apparatus and compared to calorimelric measurements,
