Abstract: The specific gravity balance and gravitometer are instruments for determining and recording the specific gravity of gases. Before discussing the principles and oiaeration of these instruments the meaning of specific gravity should be considered. Specific gravity can be defined as the ratio of the density of a gas at a certain pressure and temperature to the density of air at the same pressure and temperature. It is realized that the density of any gas, including air, will vary with variations of pressure and temperature, so in order to refer to a definite value representing the weight of gases the specific gravity is used. Specific gravity is one of the physical descriptions of a gas and therefore is a value which must be determined when working with gases.
