Abstract: Flexible element valves have been in use by the gas industry since the early forties. These early valves resembled a slightly swollen pipe nipple with flanges on either end. Mounted on the body was a smaller pilot regulator, a restrlctor and piping connecting the pilot to the body. They were suitable for pressure reduction, as well as overpressure protection.
