Abstract: Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) can occur in buried pipelines under certain circumstances. It has caused pipeline ruptures, and although it has not caused a large number of pipeline service failures, its prevention is or should be a major concern to operators of high pressure natural gas or liquid petroleum pipelines. From a historical perspective, underground, steel pipelines were operated for nearly 100 years before the first case of a failure caused by SCC was recognized. Once it became known that SCC could affect pipeline integrity, the pipeline industry began a comprehensive research program to assess the causes of SCC and to investigate various techniques for preventing failures from SCC. Presented herein is a brief history of the phenomenon as it has affected pipelines in North America. In this presentation, the following issues are addressed
