Abstract: The Gas Research Institute (GRI) is sponsoring research at Batlelles Columbus Laboratories (BCL) with the ultimate goal of reducing ihe number of corrosion-relaied leaks on steel gas transmission pipelines and distribution piping. Pari of the research is focused on the development of instruments that can eliminate ihe IR drop in pipe-to-soil (P/S) potentials so iliat the level of cathodic protection (CP) can be better assessed. A microprocessorbased field prototype for impressed-current (l/C), CP systems is being evaluated on oper ajting gas distribution and transmission piping systems. In addition, an instrument thai uses AC impedance techniques is being developed for use on sacrificial anode (SA) systems.
