Abstract: If you have been reading news accounts about the oil industries activities in the Baltimore Canyon, you are probably aware of the Boom to Bust attitude that has developed over the past year. In the next twenty to thirty minutes I hope to place these events into perspective and furnish you with an exploration companys viewpoint on the status of this area. Figure 1 shows the general location of the area where leasing and drilling activity has taken place. This area is located offshore in the Mid-Atlaniic approximately 50 to 100 miles off the coasts of New Jersey and Delaware. As a result of two Federal lease sales, one held in August 1976, and the other more recently in February 1979, the BLM has awarded 132 tracts covering 731,000 acres in this area. These tracts occupy an area primarily on the Continental Shelf in water depths ranging from about 130 to 2,500 feet. Generally this is a tough area to operate in because of adverse weather and has many similarities to the harsh environment of the North Sea.
