Abstract: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a set of satellites which orbit the earth at a distance of about 4.2 earth radii from the geocenter. These satellites are owned and operated by the Department of Defense (DOD). When complete, the constellation will consist of 21 satellites: 3 in each of 6 orbital planes, and 3 spares. There are currently 4 Block I and 13 Block II satellites in orbit. The Block I satellites are the prototype satellites launched by the DOD, and are gradually being phased out. The Block IIs are the more modern version.
