Abstract: Line enqineers want to use techniques whose statistical properties remain reasonably constant for data typical in manufacturing production (outliers in the data). Identifying and trimming outliers from each side of a data-distribution curve has been an approach used intuitively by line engineers for a long time to analyze data. The trimmed mean is obtained from a data set by removing a specified percentage (e.g., 10%) of observations from each side of the distribution. An application of trimmed means to a manufacturing process will be examined in this paper.
