Abstract: What is a value chain and why is it important? Why should the corrosion professional be concerned about the stuff of business analysis and economics? How can the concepts of a value chain be applied to supporting and achieving the goals in a corrosion control program, while adding value to the corporate objectives? A value chain is any group or series of activities that affects an organizations internal and external customers. It captures the interdependence across these separate organizations and demonstrates the role each play in the addition of value to the total system. One of the key elements for a value chain analysis is to de-emphasize the functional structure of the organization and examine it from a process prospective. In doing so, the emphasis is placed on how work is done, not on what or how much work was done.
