Abstract: The objective of this paper is to describe some basic statistics in simple language, and to give the user some guidance as to when it may not be necessary to stick to the rigorous rules of formal statistics. This intent is for the everyday use of measurement people who may use some statistical tools to help do their jobs better. The user should be aware, though, that these simplifications may not be defensible in litigation.
