Abstract: The three-wire method of measuring pitch diameter is a determining criterion for acceptance of thread plug gages in industry. Measurement uncertainty associated with this process has traditionally been evaluated in terms of the sum of the various components of the measuring system (gage blocks, thread measuring wires, and linear measuring machine) rather than as a unique process. This paper will discuss the results of a multi-laboratory inter-comparison of pitch diameter measurements made on a variety of thread plug gages.
