Abstract: This primer is intended for use by engineers and technicians interested in the fundamentals of intrinsic safety. It is also for others, who must make decisions with regard to the use of intrinsically safe systems. The question-and-answer format presents information covering the most frequent inquiries regarding intrinsic safety. Question 1: What is intrinsic safety? Answer: Intrinsic safety is a design technique applied to electrical equipment and wiring for hazardous locations. The technique is based on limiting energy, electrical and thermal, to a level below that required to ignite a specific hazardous atmospheric mixture.
