Abstract: Carbon trading, credits and offsets have featured prominently in the news, in Alberta and at the Canadian federal level, over the past year. This paper provides guidance to the User in the Alberta hydrocarbon industries-how have regulations changed, how will they continue to change, and what must Users do to comply. In addition to mandating compliance, the new regulations present new opportunities. Measurement projects, if properly executed and documented, can now attract additional carbon return, in addition to the usual efficiency/safety/productivity benefits used to justify such investment. While Alberta and Canadian federal regulations are new or emerging, Users in Alberta can learn from other jurisdictions in Canada, USA or Europe, which have mature carbon trading environments. Case Studies from other jurisdictions are presented, with the expectation that Users in Alberta will soon be able to apply the same methodologies to achieve similar benefits.
