Abstract: Around the turn of the Century, the gas industry was in desperate need of a practical way to measure large volumes of both natural and manufactured gas. The displacement type meter, ideally suited for accurate measurement of small volumes of low pressure gas, could not meet the new requirements due to practical considerations of design and application, Consequently, gas companies and manufacturers turned to orifice measurement as the best solution to their problem. With the acceptance of the orifice plate as a reliable primary device, attention was concentrated on the secondary device- the orifice meter.
