Title: A Comprehensive Overview Of Automotive Emission Controls
Author: Clement E. Drummond

Abstract: The gasoline powered automobile built in the United States today, incorporates good fuel economy, outstanding performance, and low emissions. Automobile manufacturers have been able to achieve these objectives through the use of the catalytic converter and an onboard computer. This paper provides an understanding of both the need for on-board computer systems and complex emission control devices and the unparalleled effect these systems have had on the service industry. The paper describes the three primary gaseous pollutants emitted by the internal combustion engine -hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen - and the progress that has been made to control them. The utilization of the three-way catalytic converter has been a major achievement in the reduction of the three major pollutants.
