Abstract: To maintain the attractiveness of the gas option to residential and commercial customers, it is essential to develop an efficient, economical and safe gas distribution system which can be installed easily in new or retrofit applications in a single or multifamily dwelling, or a commercial structure. Existing residential meter systems can pose problems where space is at a premium or even be viewed as an eyesore to the building tenant or architect. This paper will discuss the needs and benefits for a compact gas meter system, the available options utihties are currently exploring and the strategy and status of the compact gas meter program at the Gas Research Institute.
