Abstract: Mr. E. Ross Foreman in The Handbook of Applied Instrumentation defines the term Primary Element as the portion of the measuring means which first either utilizes or transforms energy from the controlled medium to produce an effect which is. a function of change in the value of the controlled variable. This effect may be a change of pressure, force, position, electrical potential, or resistance. Our purpose is to attempt to add to your knowledge, or at least to your awareness of the many considerations & design criteria involved in those areas in which we feel best qualified to contribute further, concentrating on specific aspects of design, manufacture and/or application, which may be commonly overlooked or taken for granted because of their very basic nature.
