Abstract: As the Year 2000 approaches, Gas Utilities must correct the Millennium Bug that is present in the numerous business, financial, and customer information systems. In this effort, one typically overlooked area is the various embedded systems used throughout the Engineering and Operations areas. The Millennium Bug is the inability of a computer to differentiate the year 2000 from 1900, and subsequently cause either failure of the system or corrupt data. That same vulnerability that is present in mainframe hardware and software is also embedded in the numerous microprocessors contained in the equipment utilized throughout the Operations of the Utility.
