Abstract: Perhaps I should begin my discussion of NIOSH and its criteria development activities by stating what is probably obvious that NIOSH is an acronym for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a unit of the United States Public Health Service. NIOSH and the Department of Labors Occupational Safety and Health Administration (or OSHA) were given certain responsibihties by legislative mandate of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 to assure so far as possible every working man and woman in the nation safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve our human resources.
