Abstract: In dimensional measurement the uncertainty is often dominated by the effects of thermal expansion. In this paper I discuss these effects, their sources, and the methods used to determine the uncertainty components. In an extended example, the thermal uncertainty components for the measurement of a steel gage on a one dimensional measuring machine (UMM) is derived for different levels of laboratory temperature control and measurement.
