Abstract: In 1937, the Bureau of Mines Engineers in Dallas, Texas, developed equipment for reproducing on a laboratory scale actual fires and explosions which have occurred in the mineral and allied industries. Up to this time, few people had ever seen how flame travels through a sewer or pipe, how pressures built up as that flame travels, or how pressure can cause piping to rupture and sewer manhole covers to be blown off
