Abstract: This paper examines the history of substitute natural gas (SNG) from its beginnings in California to the present time. SNGs greatest growth period was in the early 1970s. The reasons for this, together with the process used for the expansion, are discussed. Currently, SNG appears to be in a long-term decline. The author has no comment to make on when this will end, but he is certain that eventually it win.
