Abstract: The 1970s saw the introduction of computer-based Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to pipeline operations. The 1980s introduced sophisticated SCADA software packages into Gas Control computer systems to provide advanced monitoring and control functions. In the 1990s, we are now witnessing substantial changes in the purposes to which operating companies are applying their SCADA data. The dissemination of this SCADA information within an operating company can have a significant impact on the way in which a company conducts its business, and the level of success that company enjoys in the market place. This paper examines the developments associated with the changing significance of SCADA information and describes some of the operational and business applications to which this information can be applied.
