Abstract: SEDIMENT AND WATER (S&W) ARE NATURALLY ACCURRING COMPONENTS OF PRODUCED CRUDE OIL. IN THIS PAPER WE WILL DISCUSS WHAT S&W IS AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO MONITOR AND TEST FOR ITS PRESENCE IN CRUDE OIL. IN THE API MANUAL OF PETROLEUM MEASUREMENT STANDARDS (MPMS) CHAPTER 1, SEDIMENT AND WATER IS DEFINED AS A MATERIAL COEXISTING WITH, YET FOREIGN TO, PETROLEUM LIQUID, THAT REQUIRES A SEPARATE MEASUREMENT FOR REASONS THAT INCLUDE SALES ACCOUNTING.
