Abstract: IEEE-488 was intrcduced in 1975 and today there are close to 2000 products which conform to this interface standard. This paper examines interfacing problems prior to IEEE-488 and the solutions provided by the standard. Key technical specifications are examined with emphasis on what set* their technical limit and how these limits can be extended if necessary.
