Abstract: New technology on measuring and testing of liquid hydrocarbons continues to improve the quantity and quality for custody transfer measurements. However, the cost of these improvements coupled with the shear number of crude oil leases which exist today necessitates that the majority of custody transfer measurement continue to be done manually using the same type gauging equipment which has been used for decades. Gauging equipment has been improved through expanded quality control monitoring from both manufacturers and end users. An increased emphasis from the American Petroleum Institutes Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards for verification of gauging equipment, against certified test standards which are traceable to the National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST), is improving the quality of equipment at the field level.
