Abstract: The Philadelphia Electric Company began operation of a new modern central gas meter shop in 1972. The selection of a power and free conveyor system and other automated equipment has permitted a reduction in manpower requirements of nine men. Previously, three suburban division shops performed the necessary gas meter test and repair operations with a total of twenty-one men. The new central shop operates efficiently with only twelve men which includes a Shop Supervisor and a working Foreman,
