Abstract: Automatic control has long been commonplace in the oil and gas industry, with a high degree of sophistication in the refining and processing areas. The automatic controls used in the production and transportation of oil and gas have been relatively simple. Most efforts have been directed in the areas of measurement and communication. We have experienced dramatic changes in technology in oil and gas production in recent years, and as we approach the 1980s we are all very much aware of the changes in technology used in oil and gas production controls. Coal gasification and liquefaction, tertiary recovery techniques, biomass conversion, oil shale, and tar sands extraction are either realities or close to becoming realities.
