Title: Polyethylene Valves For Natural Gas Distribution Service

Abstract: Increasing use of polyethylene pipe in buried natural gas mains and services has had a major impact on gas distribution valve requirements. Iron and steel valves which have been used satisfactorily for decades present some new problems when used with polyethylene pipe. First, transition fittings are required to adapt metal valve to polyethylene pipe. Second, buried metal valves and adaptors may compromise the corrosion resistance of an otherwise all plastic system. Third, valve operating torque may require special attention to avoid excessive strain oii plastic pipe.
