Abstract: The need of the gas industry to measure large volumes of gas at high pressure led to the development of the orifice meter. Nearly all of the early successful orifice meters were the mercury type. However, during the mid-forties, the first bellows meters were introduced to the gas industry as Dry Meters. It appears that the bellows or dry type of orifice meter is the most widely used today, but many measurement people feel that the mercury type of meter is the more accurate. Due to safety-problems inherent in the handling, cleaning and transporting of mercury, there has been a decline in the use of mercury gauges.
