Abstract: During the oil-water separation process in free water knock-out (FWKO) drums and treaters, it is crucial to monitor the progress of separation. Only a few technologies are available to measure the oil-water interface and the emulsion layer in the extreme environment in the FWKOs and the most reliable and precise of those is a radiometric density instrumentation profiling solution. Radiometric profiling involves taking several measurements from top to bottom of the FWKO to get a profile or a distribution of the densities.
