Abstract: On October 6, 1979, an explosion occurred at the Cove Point, Maryland liquefied natural gas receiving terminal when leaking LNG was ignited by an electrical arc. The explosion destroyed an electrical substation building containing switchgear and motor controllers. Investigations inio the cause of the leak led lo the redesign of numerous electrical/ process interface connections and to the development of industry proposed changes in both the National Electrical Code and the National Fire Protection Association Standard for the Production, Storage and Handling of Liquefied Natural Gas.
